Tanzania is a country in Africa. Hitching for free is possible on the main routes as there is relatively dense traffic. Most private car's drivers will stop for "white" people as they consider them "not dangerous". In a more remote areas (or less visited) you must be exceptionally lucky to get a free lift as the only mean of transport is a shared taxi.

Cities:

Me & my girlfriend had a pleasure to hitch from

  1. south: from Morogoro to Mbeya <truck with fuel load>
  2. north: from Dar-Es-Salaam to Tanga <private car of an bisnessman>

After 3 weeks of backpacking there my observation is as follows: Hitching for free its possible on the main routes as there is quite dense (As for Africa) traffic. Most private car's drivers will stop for "white" people as they consider us :" not being dangerous" In a more remote areas (or less visited) U must be exceptionally lucky to get a free lift. As the only mean of transport is a shared taxi.
