The Siret-Porubnoe border crossing joins Romania at the town of Siret (near Suceava) and Ukraine at the village of Porubnoe (near Chernivtsi).

Walking across this border is not permitted. However, there are frequent queues to cross, and one can ask the drivers waiting there. Be sure to explain that crossing on foot is not possible and, if coming from Ukraine, say you have no cigarettes (these being common contraband at this crossing). Zenit was permitted to walk across this border crossing without much fuss in late August 2011.

Sleeping

Entering Romania from Ukraine, there is a large field half a kilometre from the border crossing and just past a petrol station. Camping here is quite easy, and in the morning you can wash up at the petrol station. Cars are going by quickly here, so if you want to hitchhike further towards Suceava, it is better to walk back up to the border and thumb where drivers are going slow.
