When hitchhiking from '''Pécs''' to [[Budapest]], take a local bus, e.g. 2 or 2A to ''Budai Állomás'' bus stop. Although the road 6/E73 goes straight through Pécs, you simply won't get a ride inside the city. At ''Budai Állomás'' there is a crossroad with a traffic light. Cross, walk towards the direction of Budapest, downhill. Start hitching when you passed the petrol station, and you are at the other side of the valley, under the bus stop sign. That is where you are the most visible.

Pécs (Fünfkirchen in German) is the fifth largest city of Hungary, not far from the Croatian border. Being almost 2000 years old, Pécs is the cultural centre of the surrounding county of Baranya and a long standing melting pot of numerous different cultures.

Hitching Out

North towards Budapest

When hitchhiking from Pécs to Budapest, take the M60 motorway, it is just finished and local hitch-hikers use it frequently. Take the bus 41 until the last stop /Reménypuszta/, there's the 58th road. Follow it for 500 meters and you'll find the toll to Budapest.

South towards Croatia (Osijek) and Bosnia (Sarajevo) (57 and E73/7)

When hitchiking from Pécs to Sarajevo take local bus 20 or 20A to the last stop. Walk to the main road, which is the 57 and hitch south in direction of Mohacs. Eventually you'll hit a roundabout where you can either go straight into the city of Mohacs or right towards Udvar - the border crossing from Hungary into Bosnia. Head towards Udvar, this is not the road E73/7. Rides are a bit sparse here and most heading that direction are actually heading into a back road of Mohacs, not to Udvar. So if your ride drops you off here, you'll have a more select audience if you walk a bit until you cross a bridge and pass the small road to Mohács on the left. Once you reach the border crossing, there's quite a few trucks there you can catch a ride with. (June 2008)

Public Transport

Local

Pécs has a reasonable public transportation system consisting of 50 or so bus lines.

Buses 2 and 2A go from one end of the city to another on the road 6/E73, so they are your best chances hitching either into or out of the town. Please note that when going eastwards, the bus no. 2 leaves 6/E73 after the stop Budai Állomás. A bus ticket costs 220 HUF (somewhat less than €1) or 300 HUF (roughly €1) when bought on the bus from the conductor. Tickets are sold at newspaper kiosks and also at smaller groceries. Conductors are also responsible for checking the existance of your ticket when getting on, so it's virtually impossible to travel without one. If you want to spend a longer time in the town you may also consider buying a day ("napijegy" - 950 HUF, rougly €3) or a weekly ("hetijegy" - 2900 HUF, roughly €10) ticket.

If you want to go up the hill take one of the buses 34, 35 or 35A. The final station of the bus no. 35 is the TV broadcasting tower on Misinatető.

The southern part of the town (mainly consiting of blocks of flats - not much to see for the average traveller) also has a bus terminal. Take lines 3, 6 and 7 from the railway station to get there.

Inland

You can also leave the town by bus or train. The bus ("Autóbusz-pályaudvar") and the railway station ("Főpályaudvar") are both located southwards from the inner town (10-20 minutes walk). The railway station also serves as the terminal for a bunch of local buses so it's relatively easy to get there.
