You can hitchhike your way there by thumbs or writing "ABC" on a panel, or you can take a bus (around 2€), for exemple the bus n°3 from Matkakeskus in the city center. Once there, there's a gas station where you can ask people, or you can hitchhike with a panel, there's a nice bus stop if you're going to Kuopio, and a small platform if you're going to Lahti. Jyväskylä is a city located in Central Finland, 147 km from Tampere and 270 km from Helsinki. There are so many students in Jyväskylä (a third of the total population), people call Jyväskylä "Athens of Finland". The city is easy to hitch in or out.
Hitchhiking out
South-west towards Tampere, Turku Template:H E 63 or west towards Keuruu Template:H
There's a pretty good hh-spot just next to the university's campus called Mattilanniemi. Coming from the center: follow the street called Kauppakatu (the name changes into Seminaarinkatu and then to Alvar Aallon katu). Turn left to Kramsunkatu. There's a bridge for pedestrians over Rantaväylä to the university campus. Don't cross the bridge but go down the small hill to the "shoulder", the side of the road, of Rantaväylä. Walk a bit closer to the traffic lights.
East toward Varkaus, Kuopio E 63, South towards Heinola, Lahti E 75
This is a bit tricky but not impossible. Coming from the center: Cross the bridge that goes over the train station. There's an exhibition center (Messuhalli) on the other side of the train tracks and the road. Walk to the left after the bridge towards the road. Go over a small knee-height fence to the shoulder of the road. Walk on the side of the road a bit more to find a good hitchhiking spot, where the cars have enough space to stop. If this doesn't work out, walk down the road some more until you reach a pedestrian path on your right hand side. Follow it until it goes up in a bridge to cross the motorway. Hitchhike before the bridge, because that's where the cars start speeding up.
Another solution is to reach the ABC station of Vaajakoski, to the east of the city. Worked quite well after failing to find any car on the previous spot.
