Metz is not really easy to hitch out of. There are no real good spots close to the city. It is better to get dropped out of town as soon as possible in order to be able to hitch a better ride afterwards.

Keep walking almost up to the very intersection and right before it take to the right onto a dirt road on the side of a field. Walk this dirt road alongside A4 and you'll see a service station around 500 meters ahead.

Get off at the stop '''''Goujenotte''''' beside the massive IKEA shopping centre and walk down the road until you see a roundabout and an ESSO service station nearby. Walk down the ramp until you reach both of the exits. One [[hitchhiker]] got a lift within 10 minutes while standing between the ESSO petrol station exit and a [[motorway]] exit. There is a lot of international traffic in this region.

=== Going South (towards [[Nancy]], [[Dijon]], [[Lyon]], [[Spain]], etc.) ===- Take a bus number 6 from "place ''Place de la republique", République'' direction '''''La Maxe ''''' and go to the last stop (1,20 EUR). From there, walk west, cross walk over the autoroute motorway and walk further on the same street around 2km 2 km until you see the petrol station. When you see the petrol station, it is better to walk about 500metres 500 metres further and walk into the station along the autoroute motorway (there's a little path that will bring you on the autoroutemotorway. From the petrol station, it is easy to get rides directly to Lyon or even further.

I used a Nancy sign From there walk to get out Grigy (part of town and got dropped off Metz). Once in a service area 30km southwardGrigy, from where you can easily hitch a long distance ride with keep on walking along D955 outwards the city center (follow the signs to Strasbourg). The road goes slightly uphill on top of which there's a truck-driver. I think under roundabout right before the short bridge is over the best place in Metz motorway to hitch out of and Nancy is , then another roundabout. Stand just right after the best sign second roundabout (one hitchhiker tried three times there and never had to holdwait for more than 20 mins). It is easy If you go to be stuck in Metz Germany make a sign for Strassbourg and the faster you then get out, off at the better[[peage]] which is about 30 km away.You can also make a sign saying A4 Est - Peage

From the main train station (la Gare) or Place de la République take the bus number 8 or U It is possible to Technopole (both stop next to lake Symphonie - ask the driver). From there walk to Grigy (part of Metz). Once in Grigy, keep get a ride towards these three different directions by standing on walking along D955 outwards the city center (follow the signs to Strasbourg). The road goes slightly uphill on top of which there's a roundabout right before ''''Avenue Joffre''''', under the short bridge over , at the hwywestern part of town. to Nancy, then another roundabout. Stand just right after It merges with the second roundabout and hopefully you'll soon score your ride to Strasbourg (tried thrice and never had to wait for more than 20 mins)A31 300m further.   The [[peage]] which is about 30 km away seems to make Always use a good spot.
