I've spent hours and hours hitchhiking around Japan from Zamami; Hateruma; Ishigaki, Okinawa, to Nagano and as many cities in between- unbelievable hospitality , generosity and friendliness
One time I was dozing at a service station with three different cities in kanji on my sign and a guy stopped going to where I'd heard had the best onsen and was the best of all main islands (Shikoku?) and ended up staying about 3 days with them improving their son's English and sharing life together
Truly magical place to hitchhike around but can be frustrating due to navigation difficulties language barrier etc
Remember above all things when hitchhiking in Japan to bow!
